SEXISM IN THE GAMING INDUSTRY

Video games have always been a male preferred thing to do. I feel the reason games are becoming more and more appealing for men is the fact that men play games more than women especially at an older age. The arguments for this article is that videos, movies, etc., are portraying their characters as products and not people. Our society today is filled with a lot of different things that can exploit an individual or group in ways people may have no interest or have aa high interest for. Its all about marketing and sells. Money is powerful in our world and trying to get the most is everyone's goal especially in advertisement. The way games are advertised is to make money, not to really worry about who thinks its wrong to sell and who thinks its not the right message but its a business. Games have real life situations in them which can be harmful to some people and age groups and should probably not be sold to a younger audience who may not get the concepts, this is why games come with warning labels and age prefered players.

Hi Darryl:

Thank you for your response. Sexism in gaming, in fact, gendered assignments and roles in gaming is a huge system of ideological power.

I'm curious about:
"The arguments for this article is that videos, movies, etc., are portraying their characters as products and not people"

In what ways do you see the media negating the humanity of women, men, youth, and crafting their identities as 'products' or commodities?

well i feel that the media always can negate a certain group, race, culture, or item. Through gaming women are seem in various ways, one in which is evident through most games can be seen as women being used for a symbol of sex. women on games are made to be seen as sexy and are portrayed as softer than men meaning some of the actions are not allowed for them. Kids can recieve negative images from games like graand theft auto and games that have language in which is seen as inappropriate. Men can be dragged into the gaming world just off of these titles and ways a game is formatted and the cover as well.

Your review of the gaming industry reminds me of the movie we watched in class called "Dream World". The gaming industry is marketing towards a male audience, so naturally they would use sexy women and buff male characters as marketing tools. The characters within the games would come from molds of what makes a real man and a real woman. Another thing to consider is that some games are created and manufactored in other countries, so it resemble's another countries ideology.

I also agree with your comment on how some games could be harmful to young players. Video games are a form of media that has the power to influence and shape people's outlook on what is right or wrong.
